Dylan 65 Revisited

Has anyone else picked up the new Don't Look Back '65 Tour Deluxe Edition? If you haven't, you should! I just saw it in the store a couple weeks ago and I just had to pick up a copy; well worth the money! The box includes 2 DVD's, a reprint of the Don't Look Back book (including a new forward by D.A. Penebaker) and a flip-book of a frame-by-frame breakdown of the first verse of the famous "Subterranean Homesick Blues" cue-card sequence. The first disc is the same as the previous DVD release of DLB--with some updates to Dylan's discography and Penebaker's filmography. The REAL treat is the second disc: Dylan '65 Revisited, a new hour-long feature of deleted scenes that Penebaker edited down from 20 hours of footage, plus a new audio commentary by Penebaker and Bob Neuwirth. I just watched the outtakes, quite a lot of fun. Some of the highlights are a performance of "If You Gotta Go, Go Now (Or Else You Gotta Stay)" and a scene of Dylan, Neuwirth and Grossman devising an "escape route" for themselves and the Beatles after the Royal Albert Hall concert.

Anybody else seen any of this? What are your thoughts?

can anyone help?

I'm looking for a CD copy of Bob's '73 album, "Dylan" (or "A Fool Such As I", as it was titled in Europe and the rest of the world). From what I've heard, this wasn't released to CD by Columbia with the rest of the catalogue during the eighties; I've also heard that it was released, but in limited quantities. I saw a copy a few weeks back on eBay, but it went for a three-digit sum and I haven't been able to find another copy there (which is odd because I can almost find anything I'm looking for on eBay).

So, can someone please help me with acquiring this album, if at all possible?

Dylan musical

Hi group,
What did everyone think of the broadway musical on Dylan's music?
I saw a news program mention it, I thought it was so fucking bad I really thought it was a joke.
It was as though a fusion took place between "Cats" a "Chorus Line" add some Dylan and with Richard Simmons in the lead role!
The only thing that kept Bob from rolling over in his grave is that he isn't dead.
Man, to think he even approved of this piece of crap to begin with, I wonder about him sometimes.
How could any sane person have thought that this idea could have worked?

Scorsese Documentary

Hi group,
I'm sure most of you have seen the documentary that Scorsese did, what did you think of it?
I loved it, it reactivated my love of Dylan's music. I really enjoy the cd of the songs included in the film, it's wonderful to hear outtakes, live versions, and covers I'd never heard before.
I really got into Dylan big-time back in the mid 80's, I was in my 20's then. I was buying as much of his records, lyrics book, bios etc... as I could afford at certain times. He was a wonderful discovery, and when one hasn't listened to him for quite some time (as I have) and you come back to him, you rediscover so many great things. That's true with any great artist, Dylan for sure, you can always come back to him.
I remember hearing my copy of "Bringing it all Back Home" for the first time, I sat on my bed motionless (except for staring at the album cover) and listened to it all the way through. When it finished, I listend to it all the way again. Then that same night, I played it for my friend who was a Dylan freak as well. I was like "Man! You gotta hear this record!!"
So many of his tunes could mirror your time frame, or reflect your feelings. "Don't Think Twice, it's Alright" "Boots of Spanish Leather" and "Blood on the Tracks" were great records to listen to when you sulked over a break-up, and you were a young, overly sensitive 21 year old, as I was then!
If you were there during the 80's, then you know how much the airwaves sucked, and shitty music was everywhere. For me in those days, Bob Dylan was like finding a treasure trove.
There's nothing like discovering him for the first time.

Dylan to Host XM Satellite Radio Show

Dylan to Host XM Satellite Radio Show
From Associated Press
December 14, 2005 11:45 AM EST
NEW YORK - Bob Dylan will host a weekly music show on XM Satellite Radio, the first time the rock star has had his own radio show.

Dylan will select music for the hour-long show, which will debut in March on XM's deep album rock channel, the station announced Tuesday.

He'll also offer comments on music and other subjects, interview guests and answer e-mail from XM subscribers.

"Songs and music have always inspired me," the 64-year-old Dylan said in a statement. "A lot of my own songs have been played on the radio, but this is the first time I've ever been on the other side of the mic."

Happy New Year Dylan peeps!
I posted a photo in this tribe today, and was wondering if anyone could help me out. I was hoping to find out how old or new it was. It's labeled photo year help? or something like that, and it was the photo used for all the 2002 tour dates. Any light someone could shed could possibly win me a really nice dinner with a very cute date, so I would forever be grateful!
thanks!

Bob Dylan's college poetry auctioned

Bob Dylan's college poetry auctioned
Mon Nov 21, 2005 6:24 PM ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A collection of poems written by legendary rock poet Bob Dylan as a student at the University of Minnesota in 1960 sold for $78,000 on Monday in a Rock & Pop Memorabilia auction at Christie's.

The 16 pages of poems hand-written in pencil formed the earliest Dylan manuscript ever offered for auction and it fetched the highest auction price to date for the acclaimed songwriter, according to Christie's.

A title page was inscribed in blue ink "Poems Without Titles," with the majority of the poems signed Dylan or Dylanism.

The poetry was acquired by an unidentified private European interest.

Dylan arrived at the college in 1959 as freshman Robert Zimmerman from upstate Hibbing and left at the end of 1960 as folk singer and songwriter Bob Dylan, headed to make his mark on the folk scene in New York's Greenwich Village.

The second-highest priced item in the sale that grossed $661,536 was Eric Clapton's Fender composite Stratocaster electric guitar, circa 1959, which sold for $36,000.

The song is "Tell Old Bill" - a traditional song recorded in studio in 2005. A beautiful recording.
It's on the soundtrack for the movie, "North Country."
The track is also available by itself on iTunes for 99 cents.
Worth every penny !!!

I love in No Direction when he says "...He's got the spirit of the G-d him. You can see that just by looking at him. Except that instead of tapping him on his shoulder, he kicked him in the ass." And then Tom gives that big hearty laugh that only a southerner can give. I love that!

Bootleg Copy of Joan Baez's Version of Percy's Song?

I saw the Scorcese film and once again was blown away by the scene which he used from Pennebaker's film where Joan Baez is singing "Percy's Song" while Dylan types away. I have never been a big fan of hers - but it is so haunting and so beautiful that I am hoping to get a copy of it. Anyone know where I could get it?

The liner notes on the no direction home soundtrack credit
3 keyboard players on track 10 disc 2
visions of johanna lists Al Kooper and Garth Hudson both playing organ along with Richard Manuel on Piano... the take is listed as happening in November of 65 well before the nashville blonde on blonde sessions.

Kooper did not play on that session.
While novel, the notion that there would be 2 organs and piano playing with beeb is inconsistant with reality.
Kooper confirms he was not there.

Dylan collectors get a double treat

Dylan collectors get a double treat
September 08, 2005 4:20 PM EDT
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- Bob Dylan collectors worldwide were ecstatic over the Aug. 30 release of the two-CD "No Direction Home: The Soundtrack (The Bootleg Series Volume 7)" and the upcoming home DVD release of the Martin Scorsese film "No Direction Home: Bob Dylan" Sept. 20.

This latest edition in the critically acclaimed "Bootleg Series" is the companion soundtrack to the two-part feature-length film by Scorsese. The film will air on PBS' "American Masters" series Sept. 26-27. All three of these projects cover the early to mid-'60s.

The two-CD chronologically sequenced package contains 28 tracks, 26 previously unreleased, made up of rare private recordings, live concert, television and festival recordings, and 12 alternate takes of songs from his Columbia LP recording sessions in New York and Nashville during this period.

The songs cover 1959 (a high school recording of "When I Got Troubles," most likely the first original song he ever recorded) to 1966 (alternate takes of "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat" and "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" from the "Blonde on Blonde" album recording sessions).

Many of the songs are introduced in the film for the first time, or are representative of times and places covered in the film, while others are alternate takes of classic tracks that were discovered during the making of the film. For example, the version of Woody Guthrie's classic "This Land Is Your Land," performed in 1961 at the intimate Carnegie Chapter Hall in New York, was never known to have existed in any form until now.

On the other hand, the movie version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" is taken from Murray Lerner's Festival film of the Newport Folk Festival in July 1964, while the CD version presents the first complete take recorded in June of the same year at Columbia Studios with Ramblin' Jack Elliott. The song is then followed on the CD by "Chimes of Freedom" from Newport '64.

More than 400 hours of recordings were reviewed in the preparation for "No Direction Home." In keeping with the deluxe packaging for the "Bootleg Series," the two-CD set is packaged with a 60-page color booklet that includes separate liner notes written by former manager Andrew Loog Oldham and Al Kooper, who sheds light on the recording sessions for "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Blonde on Blonde." Kooper played organ and was the musical director during both of those sessions.

The first feature-length film biography of Dylan, "No Direction Home," is narrated by the artist. In addition to hours of black and white and color archival footage and photography, it features interviews with Kooper, Joan Baez, John Cohen of the Lost City Ramblers, Allen Ginsberg, Tony Glover, Pete Seeger, Dave Van Ronk, Izzy Young of the Folklore Center and more.

Rock Cesario writes for the Daily Sentinel. E-mail: rock@tripleplayrecords.com

Today is the anniversary of the day when Bob Dylan went electric at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, to the great consternation of folk music fans.

Actually, Bob Dylan had grown up listening to rock and roll. He loved Elvis. He said once, "When I first heard Elvis's voice, I just knew that I wasn't going to work for anybody and nobody was gonna be my boss. Hearing him for the first time was like busting out of jail."

He played in rock bands in high school, but when he went to college at the University of Minnesota, he fell into the folk scene and started singing songs of Woody Guthrie. He performed wearing blue jeans and a work shirt.

But in 1964, he heard the Beatles and other British bands who played rock and roll the way Dylan remembered hearing it as a kid. He did some rock and roll on his album Bringing It All Back Home in 1965 and came out with his hit song that summer, "Like a Rolling Stone."

Bob Dylan's Hometown to Name a Street

Bob Dylan's Hometown to Name a Street
May 13, 2005 1:48 PM EDT

HIBBING, Minn. - The street where Bob Dylan grew up is being given the name "Dylan Drive" in his honor.

It's the first time the city of Hibbing, where Dylan also attended high school, is doing something permanent to honor him.

"This street sign, and the support we've received from so many people here in town, show once and for all that this town is proud of Bob and what he's accomplished," said Aaron Brown, committee chairman of Dylan Days, a four-day festival that honors Dylan and the arts.

The city had issued a proclamation on May 24, 2001, Dylan's 60th birthday, but that was just a one-day event, Brown said. The sign will be permanent.

The sign is honorary only, meaning 7th Avenue will remain the official name of the street, and residents won't have to change their addresses, Brown said.

The street sign project came up after a group of Hibbing citizens approached the City Council and gathered signatures of support.

"Through the whole peak of his career in the '60s and '70s the town did virtually nothing to honor him," Brown said. "Now, people are coming around."

I'm trying to rember an old dylan song I can't seem to find any reference to. It's about a black man who gets lynched because he refuses to go to church, and he puts all his faith in books. I think the name of the man was something like Hezekia Jones, but I think the song was called something else. One part of the song I vaguely remember goes something like "I believe a man should be indebted to his neighbor not for the reward of heaven or fear of hellfire". Can anyone tell me the name of the song and what album its on?

Got it for a holiday gift and a few chapters in it already rocks. Dylan's prose flows a lot like his lyrics here and his early take on NY is was cool.

He also quotes his Grandma as saying "Happiness is not down some road somewhere, it is the road." How cool is that?

Plagiarism

Does it bother anyone else that Bob has never addressed the issue of his plagiarizing whole lines from that Japanese guy's novel in his lyrics for "Love & Theft"? Most of the media gave him a pass for doing this but, goodness, plagiarism is a serious thing. Bob didn't acknowledge the author anywhere on the album and has passed off the lyrics as "written by Bob Dylan." I think he's something of a fink, myself. What does anyone else think? It bothers me.

Never-Ending Tour......ENDS?!?

....NO OF COURSE NOT! ;-) made you look though....

at the risk of having a conversation with myself (i'd ask the world to dance).....it seems that the esteemed Zimmy has changed up the band again! I'm told that there is a new lead guitarist, who allegedly is bringing back a more 'rock and roll' attitude to the lead guitar chair. Still featuring a pedal steel player (larry campbell?? i'm the worst with names....maybe someone newer) who also plays some fiddle, which must balance out the newfound ROCK vibe brought by the guitarist. any one heard reports? or better yet heard actual recordings? i should be getting a recent show next week and provided its not me and my siamese cat in an exclusive discussion....i'll report back.

anyone here into bit torrent downloads?? there's a gentleman over at sharingthegroove.org who is uploading the ENTIRE 1984 SUMMER TOUR OF EUROPE (all good-->excellent audience recordings) for downloading!! this summer is the 20th anniversary of that tour (which produced the 'real live' record) and was one of my fave bands with my hero Mick Taylor on guitar with Ian Mclaggin on keys.....today (June 11th) is Offenbach. Berlin tomorrow....

certainly a better anniversary than the 10 year anniversary of Nicole Brown's murder which will be marked by some terrible golf playing by OJ......

Goodnight to Mr. Ray Charles! Who even in his silent graduation from this plane reminded me of the undeniable power of his soulfulness: so rare, so true....and so completely the other end of the spectrum from this weeks extended public 'grieving' for their own misguided notion of patriotism, homer-ism, and overdone sentimentality.

Brother Ray done shed his grace on us and blessed an ugly week with a 'final word' that was silent & true.....

shit----neighbors think i'm talking to the cat again. damn.

INTRODUCTION

Greetings fellow Dylan fans;
Steven checking in from Philadelphia. I am so pleased that Senor' Bob is getting ready for another leg of his "neverending tour". I will be going to 4 or 5 shows over the next month and am so pumped that I won't have to travel to far to see him. Anybody else going to any of the shows?
Best, Steven 3~`
